Hello. This is my 7th year teaching Commercial Art at Odyssey. I truly love the subject and students. I am certified in Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and Premiere Pro. I work here only in the mornings (Periods 1-3) and in the afternoons I work at my own business as a graphic designer. I have been a Commercial Art professional for 25 years, so I have plenty of real-world experience to share with you. Visit my website at www.decographics.com to see samples of my work. I like to keep my classes fun, creative, and positive. I look forward to seeing your ideas, talent, and knowledge grow this year. Please feel free to contact me anytime you need. 😊
Assistant Teacher: Miss Taylor
Ms. Taylor is a college student and digital artist who will be graduating with her degree in Digital Media at the end of this semester. She is also certified in the same Adobe Software for Commercial Art (plus Adobe After Effects) and brings knowledge of animation, game design, and 3D modeling. She will eventually have her own classes teaching either Blender, Maya, Unity, and more. For now we are lucky to have her help us in here, so please feel free to ask her if you need anything.

Class Goals:
1) Learn the business of Commercial Art and Adobe software to a level of passing the certification exam.
• Commercial Art 1 - Adobe Photoshop (Photo Editing)
• Commercial Art 2 - Adobe Illustrator (Vector Drawing)
• Commercial Art 4 - Adobe PremierePro (Video Editing)
2) Create projects to display in local art shows.
3) Build the Odyssey Yearbook
Pre-Requisites:
1) You must have completed a DIT (general computers) class BEFORE starting Commercial Art 1. Exceptions can be made if you feel comfortable and talk to me about your experience first. Please see me if you have not.
2) You must have completed Commercial Art 1 (Photoshop) before taking any of the higher levels of Commercial Art 2, 3, or 4. You can take the others in any order after that.
Supplies:
1) Headphones to listen to my instructional videos
2) Weebly Account to make your Portfolio Website
3) Flash Drive or cloud drive to store your files (Do NOT trust the school computers to save your work. It is your responsibility to keep all of your work on your own. Losing your files is not an excuse for not turning in your work.)
4) Pocket Folder to store sketches and bell-ringers. Always have a few sheets of paper and pencil like all your classes.
Assignments:
1) INSTRUCTIONS - Assignments will be posted on this website AND Canvas every week. Occasionally we have longer assignments but usually they start on Mondays and are due on Fridays. There are slides & videos to show you how to do them. This way you can work at your own pace and are able to jump back in if you are absent.
2) PORTFOLIO SITE - All students will make a website like this one HERE in Weebly to post their work. This will be your first assignment. Each time you complete an assignment and put the JPG’s in your portfolio, you will copy and paste the link on Canvas to notify me you’re ready to be graded. You will also post any photos you use in your projects in a separate area on your webpages. Don't forget to put your grading rubric / self-reflection on each assignment post. Click HERE for more info about the Rubric.
3) BELL RINGERS - Your daily bell ringers will be completed in the first 10 minutes of class. Turn your paper in on Fridays. These will be worth 10 points of your assignment grade. Click HERE for more info.
4) BACK UP FILES - It’s your responsibility to keep back-ups of your work files! I suggest using a cloud storage like Google Drive since so that you won't lose it, but a flash drive is okay if you remember it. You can’t rely on the school computers to save your work and if it gets deleted it’s your loss since you didn’t make copies elsewhere. BE ORGANIZED!
5) YEARBOOK - When you finish an assignment early, please ask to make graphics for the yearbook. This is an long on-going project (more details to come).
6) FINISHED EARLY? - If you get done early and then stop working for something in this class then your grade will reflect that. Please read the choice board HERE and find something else to do with your time during class.
Quizzes / Tests:
1) QUIZZES - We will have small review quizzes about once per month. I usually call them "worksheets" because they are "open book" meaning you can use the Assignment Slides to locate answers or even ask me to help.
2) CERTIFICATION EXAM - The only big test we have will be the Adobe certification exam later in the year. We will be taking many practice sessions in GMetrix to prepare you for the Adobe certification exams.
Grading:
1) GRADE REPORTING - I will grade your assignment after your weblink is posted in Canvas under the assignments tab. All of your grades will be updated regularly in Canvas, so you will be aware of your grade average by checking there. I do not post grades on Focus until Interims and Report Cards.
2) EFFORT MATTERS- Part of your grade will reflect your effort. If you just throw something together quickly, don't expect the same grade as someone who spends the full amount of time making something special.
3) LATE WORK - Assignments are due according to the due dates posted. Unless you have an accommodation, points will be taken off for late work since it's part of your grading rubric . Most of you don't have this software at home to work, so it's important to make your class time productive. You are always encouraged to go back and work on your assignment again later if you're not happy with your grade.
Class Rules:
1) CHEATING - Turning in work that is not your own creation will result in an F. Trust me, I can tell. It will be your responsibility to prove that you did the work by keeping copies of all the photos you use to create your artwork.
2) I'M WATCHING YOUR SCREEN - I watch all of your computer screens on my computer w/ LanSchool. Playing games, watching YouTube (other than assignment instructions), and doing other homework is prohibited. I will remotely shut your computer off if this is a problem. Always ASK for permission to use the computer for ANYTHING other than our assignments. (Reminder: This is part of your assignment grade too).
3) COMPUTER CARE - Using the computers in class is a privilege. You are not allowed to eat and drink at your desk. You are not allowed to remove wires / change any set-ups that IT have put in place. Failure to comply with these simple rules will revoke your computer privilege and you will be assigned book-work.
4) SCHOOL WIDE RULES - Cell phone use is prohibited (teachers are instructed to take them and give them to the Dean anytime a student is caught using them); No Ear buds; No hoodies covering heads; Doors will remain locked and all tardy students must report to the Dean and get a pass; Students must use a signed planner and sign-out sheet to leave class and are only allowed 10 minutes after class starts and 10 minutes before the class ends.
Please note that following rules is part of your grading rubric and will reflect in your grade.
